There was a time when you had to be home to turn the lights on and you had to be inside your car to start the engine. Those days are gone. With the advent of multiple mobile technologies, it’s now possible to control your appliances, vehicle, and more with a touch of the button or an app on your smart phone.
Now Ford Motor Company, inventors of the super efficient Focus Electric, are bringing the convenience of mobile management to the electric car industry. The company recently debuted the MyFord Mobile, a free application for Apple devices that allows Focus Electric owners to maximize utility and minimize operating costs by communicating with the car remotely.
The MyFord app works by allowing EV owners to log in at any time to check the current state of charge of the advanced lithium-ion battery pack and enable the exclusive value charging mode. When the Focus Electric is plugged in at home, the value charging technology accesses Microsoft’s cloud computing platform to check local utility rates and then automatically starts charging when the prices drop. And what if you forget to plug in your car after getting home from work? The embedded wireless connection enables the car to send a text message alert to the owner if someone unplugs the Focus before the battery is fully charged or if the owner forgets to plug in at night.
The streamlined app also features a MapQuest-powered trip planner that enables users to map available public charging stations and plan efficient multi-destination routes. Users can select their next destination and send it directly to the car from either the app or the portal for hassle-free voice guidance. Judging from the handful of reviews on the app’s iTunes page, it’s this ability to monitor their car’s power levels while simultaneously planning their next move that gets Focus Electric owners excited.
